Business lending stays negative

The flow of lending to UK businesses remained negative in September and fell across all the main sectors of the economy in the third quarter of the year, according to the Bank of England. Its latest Trends in Lending report revealed that while some larger firms from outside of the property sectors reported that credit availability had eased, many others had concerns about access to finance. Lenders said they also expect demand for new lending to remain subdued for the remainder of the year. "We believe that persistent weakness in lending poses very real threats to a sustained UK economic recovery," said David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce.
